Warning: Spoilers Ahead!!! This is a recap blog which means I read the book and tell you everything that happens so you don't have to read it yourself. Do NOT continue to read unless you want to have the story completely and utterly spoiled.
Book Description: An errand leads Tala to the mate fate has chosen for him. Frenchie is nothing like Tala expects or perceives he wants. Can love and the universe make Tala see sense before he ruins any chance of happy every after? Tala has the life he wants. His brother leads the pack and deals with all the pesky details of their joint auto shop, leaving him to tinker with the cars. Life is just the way he likes it. In the blink of an eye, his entire world turns upside down when he's forced to enter the twilight zone of weird and wacky shifters. If that wasn't bad enough, the inconceivable mate leads him down a dirt road to unexpected happiness. Only the road has bumps. Two to be precise, and the big wolf is going to learn just had hard it is to keep his seat with a hormonal mate.
This book was published in 2021 and this is my first time reading it. I was on Facebook in one of my book groups when I saw a comment from someone who said “Just wait until you read the one where he shifts into a potato.” Dear readers, when I tell you I was ALL OVER THAT COMMENT instantly....
{{{Note from future me: this book is much longer than the usual books we cover for this blog so the blog is going to be much longer as well. Hope you're comfortable. You might want to grab a snack or twelve.}}}
We begin with our protagonist Tala. He's hot....um, temperature wise....and grumpy. His twin brother Olowin sent him on this errand, saying it would be easy but it's been nothing but a pain in his ass. Literally. He's been driving down the dirt road for so long that his ass hurts. He tells us that he was born an alpha along with Olowin but because he was a few minutes older, Tala was always expected to lead the pack when his alpha father died. Tala knew he didn't have the temperament for it so he stepped aside to let his brother lead. The pack didn't accept it at first but finally relented as long as Tala agreed not to leave the area. He was stronger so the pack wanted him there to support Olowin if needed. Tala agreed but he moved into a cabin on the outskirts so he didn't have to deal with people most of the time.
Olowin and Tala own a garage or something but Olowin is often too busy with pack business to do the grunt work. Like driving out into the middle of the nowhere in Texas to pick up some part they need. Potatoville is so out in the middle of nowhere, in fact, that it doesn't appear on maps. Tala had to message the person selling the transmission for directions. Tala is suspicious but they've been searching for months for this particular transmission so he's hoping it's legitimate.
Tala's bumping along the road, flanked on both sides by miles and miles of potato crops, when he sees a small man on the side of the road. He slams on his brakes thinking it's a child but on closer inspection, he suspects the man is in his 20's. He's only about five feet tall and barefoot. Tala notes his brown skin, gold-streaked hair and pale blue eyes. His wolf instantly takes notice and Tala wonders if the stranger poses some kind of danger to him.
Tala sniffs the air and tries to identify what kind of shifter the man is. I don't know why he assumes the man is a shifter. Maybe everyone is in this universe. At any rate, he can't identify the species but he's sure the man isn't a wolf. Tala decides to get out and talk to him. The moment his feet hit the dirt road, he feels a peace settle over him. It unnerves him because he's used to feeling tense and grumpy and he wonders if there might be some kind of drug in the soil.
The man doesn't lower his gaze as Tala approaches. Most shifters would since Tala exudes alpha energy. Tala asks him where Potatoville is but the man doesn't answer. He doesn't even blink. As Tala gets closer, he realizes the man smells like fries covered in ketchup. Tala's wolf goes insane the closer they get and he's on edge thinking there's some kind of threat nearby. He asks the man “what” he is and the man smiles and says he's a fingerling. Tala gets pissed and asks again and this time the man says “yours”.
Tala takes a step back in disbelief and the man looks sad before he straight up vanishes into thin air. Tala is shook because he realizes the strange man must have been his mate.
We're in Frenchie's head now. He's upset because Tala didn't acknowledge that they were mates. He didn't actually disappear – he just shifted back to his potato form. He rolls around in the dirt for a bit, trying to cool off from the embarrassment and the excitement but his brothers (also in potato form mind you) won't give him any peace. They tease him for thinking a wolf could be his mate and he eventually gets so upset that he rolls away toward town.
This seems like an inefficient mode of travel. Can a potato roll faster than a human can walk? I'd conduct an experiment but I don't actually have any potatoes in my house. I mean, other than my manager but that's a long story.
Frenchie can't figure out what Tala is doing in the area. Potatoville isn't on any maps to ensure their safety. Potato shifters are rare and not many know of their existence. There's always a danger they could be taken and eaten. Frenchie tells us that he has special powers that allow him to shift in clothes and to regenerate as long as 1/3 of his potato form is left. The regeneration thing has come in handy a few times when Frenchie got caught in farming equipment.
Frenchie rolls into town and then shifts into human form. He sees Tala's truck outside of Jem's house. Jem is the oldest potato shifter in town but not one of the “Elders” who run things. Frenchie listens as Jem and Tala talk about the transmission. At one point, Jem looks at him and winks, causing Frenchie to panic and shift back into a potato. Tala seems to catch scent of him so Jem walks over and casually picks him up in potato form. Frenchie worries about his fate as Tala sniffs the air again.
Tala's wolf is going wild again. He eyes the potato in Jem's hand suspiciously, thinking he just saw it move. Not only that, but Jem seems to be petting it. Tala has no idea what's going on but he doesn't want to insult Jem in any way because he really wants the transmission. Jem hands Tala the potato and Tala notices his wolf goes absolutely crazy until the potato is in his hand and then it calms down immediately. Tala cradles it protectively which makes Jem smirk. Jem says the potato belongs to Tala now and he's lucky because Frenchie isn't as annoying as some of the others. Tala is confused but still wants that transmission, so he puts the potato in his pocket. Then we get this....
“My cock took instant notice while my wolf was back to lying on his back panting.”
What the fuck does that mean?
Is he telling us he's sexually attracted to potatoes?
Tala finishes the deal and Jem gives him the transmission as well as a bag of dirt that contains a few potatoes. Is Jem.....trafficking? This is weird. Tala puts everything in the bed of his truck and drives off with Frenchie still in his pocket. He feels so strange that he's convinced he has some kind of illness. He considers going to the pack doctor but it's late when he returns so he decides to wait until morning. He leaves the transmission in the shop and then goes back to his isolated cabin, finally taking the potato out of his pocket.
Frenchie instantly shifts.
Tala freaks out and Frenchie instantly feels rejected by him. Tala's wolf is so upset by Tala's behavior that it forces a shift so it can get closer to Frenchie. The wolf sniffs Frenchie and then licks his....ahem....tuber (if you know what I mean)....a few times. Frenchie is startled and asks Tala if he only has sex in wolf form. This seems to snap Tala out of it and he shifts back into a human.
Tala picks Frenchie up and starts to carry him to the bed as if he's going to answer that sex question in no uncertain terms. Frenchie's never had sex and isn't exactly sure how the mating process is supposed to go, so he panics and turns back into a potato. Tala is convinced he's hallucinating due to some illness so Frenchie is forced to shift back and prove he's real.
Are you dizzy? Because I'm getting dizzy.
Tala wants to take Frenchie back immediately but agrees to wait until morning to do anything. The next day he calls Jem and lays into him. Jem basically calls him a racist – saying “conventional” shifters feel like they're above every other form. Tala didn't even know there were other forms until yesterday. Jem says that Frenchie can't come back to Potatoville because “the magic won't allow it”. If Tala rejects him, Frenchie will be forced to make his own way in the world. The idea pricks at Tala's conscious and upsets his wolf all over again.
Tala is pissed at the situation he's found himself in. He shifts and goes outside to run in the woods because it normally calms him. It doesn't work today. His wolf howls out in anguish which alerts both Frenchie (through their mate bond) and his brother Olowin (through their pack bond). Olowin catches up with him first since wolves are faster than potatoes. Tala doesn't want to talk to him but Olowin persists until Tala admits he found his mate but he has no intention of actually mating with him. Olowin can sense that the mate isn't a wolf and reassures Tala that the pack will accept another animal. Tala says that his mate is a potato and Olowin laughs.
I don't blame him really. It's not like anyone was aware that potato shifters existed before this point.
Frenchie finally rolls up in potato form and then shifts into human. Olowin is so startled, he falls off his rock and into the river. Frenchie introduces himself and then apologizes for being a disappointment. He seems really sad about being rejected and Tala reacts to that. He says he isn't necessarily rejecting Frenchie which causes great elation. Frenchie climbs Tala like a tree and Olowin discreetly excuses himself.
Frenchie chatters nervously, promising Tala that he'll be a good, helpful mate. Tala seems unsure about the whole thing but sits with Frenchie in his lap and kisses him. Things progress and Tala tears Frenchie's clothes off. They get to second base or so before Frenchie pulls back to ask if he can roll over Tala's chest in potato form.
Um.
Okay.
Talal seems okay with that but then tells Frenchie to shift so he can carry him back to the cabin in his mouth.
What the hell am I reading?
They both shift and wolf Tala picks potato Frenchie up in his mouth. (R/brandnewsentence) As he's running toward the cabin with Frenchie in his mouth, Tala acknowledges that they are mated and vows not to fight it anymore. When they get back to the cabin, they both shift human again and a rather normal sex scene happens. Tala is very considerate which is nice since Frenchie is so inexperienced and nervous. He gives Frenchie the mating bite which kicks off the process on his side.
Afterwards, Frenchie shifts and begins to roll all over Tala's body. It brings Tala a feeling of great peace and he ends up falling asleep.
Frenchie continues to roll all over Tala while he sleeps. He feels an odd, unsettled feeling which only gets better when he rolls across some....ahem....guy gravy (if you know what I mean)....that's dripping from Tala's....ahem...french fry (if you know what I mean)....and pooling on his stomach. He doesn't know much about the mating process because the elders never speak of it, but he figures out that he has to cover himself in Tala's....gravy....in order to complete it.
Frenchie wakes Tala up and explains through their telepathic mating connection that he needs to cover Frenchie's potato form in his...gravy. Tala just goes with it. He....ahem....waxes his cucumber (if you know what I mean) until the...gravy....spills all over Frenchie. Then he rubs it into Frenchie's potato skin for good measure.
Excuse me, good sir, but what. the. fuck?
So this dude just seriously jerked off over a potato and then rubbed the....substance....all over it? I can't decide whether I'm pissed I can't picture it or blessed. I bet it's a hilarious image.
Anyway, Frenchie shifts back to human and they cuddle.
Serious question...........is he still covered in cum?
Six days pass. Most of them are spent having sex but eventually Tala has to get back to work. The rest of the pack can tell he's mated because when shifters mate, their scents combine, but none of them can figure out what he's mated to. It doesn't smell like an animal. Tala isn't interested in talking about it but a couple of the braver Betas approach him. The one named Redin won't back down and leave Tala alone about it so Olowin steps in. Redin won't retreat so Olowin threatens to kick him out of the pack. When Tala asks him about this extreme reaction, Olowin tells him that Redin has become a problem and a lot of the pack is frustrated with him.
(((Note from future me: I thought this was going to be a major plot point but it was not.)))
An Omega shyly asks if they'll be able to meet Tala's mate at some point and Olowin says he'll be introduced at the pack meeting the next day. It's tradition for a new couple to do a blood ritual (biting each other) in front of the entire pack and then they'll receive the Alpha's blessing. It gives Tala a new thing to worry about. He's not sure Frenchie can complete the biting part of the ceremony. I'm not sure why. They do it in their human forms and Frenchie should be able to bite and break the skin without fangs. Tala voices his concerns to Olowin who tells him that the pack will never accept Frenchie without the ritual so they're going to have to figure it out.
Suddenly Tala gets a horrible feeling in his chest and he knows Frenchie is in some kind of trouble. He tries to reach out with their mate connection but they're too far apart, so he shifts and takes off for home. Olowin follows in Tala's truck. When he gets to the cabin, he finds Frenchie unconscious on the floor, gushing blood from the head.
We go back in time a bit so we can find out what happened to Frenchie. He putters around the house after Tala leaves feeling a little lonely. He's used to being surrounded by his huge family so the quiet of the cabin is unnerving. As he thinks about how much he misses his family, he suddenly worries that they have no idea that he's alive and safe. He just disappeared without a word and Jem is the only one who knows what happened to him. He can't be sure Jem told anyone anything because the old man is a bit of a recluse. There's no phone in the house, so the only option is to try to email him. Luckily Tala doesn't have his computer password protected and Frenchie is able to access it easily.
Jem replies that he's informed Frenchie's family of the situation and they're sad but they know he's okay. He lets Frenchie know about the bag of dirt he gave Tala and says Tala can come back anytime he needs more. Frenchie asks why he can't come get more dirt and Jem tells him about the magic keeping him out of town from now on. Frenchie is sad he will never be able to see his family again.
The only warning Frenchie gets that something bad is about to go down is a whoosh of fur and the smell of wet dog. He's attacked and falls to the floor unconscious.
We catch up to present time. Frenchie comes to slowly, hearing things around him but not being able to open his eyes or respond. He can hear Tala's voice saying that he can't stop the bleeding. Frenchie manages to say “potato...bag...dirt”. Tala tells Olowin to get the bag from the bed of his truck. While he's gone, Frenchie manages to open his eyes. He sees the terror on Tala's face as Tala begs him not to die and he's reassured that his mate actually has feelings for him.
Olowin brings the bag in. Frenchie shifts and telepathically tells Tala to put him in the dirt. Olowin takes out all the potatoes and Tala puts Frenchie in the dirt. He gently rubs dirt all over Frenchie and the healing process begins. The process leaves Frenchie temporarily unable to communicate but he can hear Tala panicking about losing him. Eventually the process finishes and Frenchie rolls out of the bag and shifts human. Tala grabs him and kisses him all over the face in relief.
Tala hears a strange man's voice and realizes that one of the potatoes from the bag has shifted. Just one though. Frenchie is excited to see the man who turns out to be his brother Russ. Russ is terrified as Olowin in wolf form looms over him. I guess Olowin shifted because his wolf sensed his mate. Russ ends up passing out and Frenchie sighs. He tells Olowin that his brother is a little nervous but he'll make a good mate. Olowin shifts back human and picks up potato Russ. He asks if Russ needs to go in the dirt but Frenchie assures him that Russ is fine and will wake up soon.
Sure enough, Russ wakes up and shifts back human. He's still being held by Olowin and he freaks out, begging Frenchie to save him from the “monster”. This hurts Olowin's feelings deeply and he puts Russ down gently and then flees. Frenchie admonishes Russ for being rude to his mate but Russ insists that there's no way he's mated to a wolf. Someday he's going to find a nice potato to settle down with. Frenchie tells him it's not going to happen and that he can never go home. Russ bursts into tears.
So I take it Russ isn't here voluntarily. Jem really did traffic him.
Frenchie gets Russ calmed down enough that Russ falls asleep in the spare room. He's emotionally and physically exhausted but he goes to take a shower to wash the blood out of his hair. Tala appears and steps into the shower with him. He gently washes Frenchie's hair and then cleans his body as well. Afterwards, he wraps Frenchie in a towel and carries him to the kitchen so he can eat. As he cooks steaks for them both, Tala nods toward the other potatoes and asks if any of them are going to shift. Frenchie opens his potato senses and reassures Tala that the rest are just vegetables.
Tala cooks them and Frenchie eats them. I'm mildly horrified by this.
Frenchie tells Tala that the old way of mating was for the mates to eat a portion of each other. This gets Tala paranoid over whether or not they're truly mated. Frenchie suggests calling Jem but Tala says he should just eat Frenchie to be sure. Frenchie is okay with it. He tells Tala to get the magic dirt and then to cut and peel about ¼ of him. Tala freaks out at the idea of cutting and peeling Frenchie.
WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING???
Frenchie reassures him that everything will be fine and then he shifts.
Tala is still freaked the fuck out. He puts Frenchie on a cutting board and tries to shut his mind off so he can't think about what he's about to do. Quickly he cuts about ¼ of Frenchie off and then rushes to put the bigger piece of potato in the magic dirt. He panics when nothing seems to happen but Russ appears in the doorway and tells him it will take time. He reassures Tala that he can feel Frenchie through their brother bond and he's fine.
Tala is just standing there with his hands in the dirt not sure what to do so Russ asks if Tala wants him to cook Frenchie for him. Tala isn't a big fan of how that sounds but honestly he's the one who started this so he needs to man the fuck up. Russ reminds him that Frenchie has special abilities – like shifting with his clothes on instead of naked. Tala says he tore Frenchie's clothes off days before and that's why he's walking around naked now. Russ is alarmed and says Frenchie needs the clothes because they are a part of him. Tala instantly decides to go down to the river where he left the clothes a week ago to see if they're still there.
Luckily they are. Tala carries them home and then suggests they put the clothes in the dirt with Frenchie to see if they'll regenerate too. Russ thinks it's an okay idea so they go with it. He's peeled the small piece of Frenchie and asks Tala how he wants it cooked. Tala tries not to think about it and asks for fries with lots of ketchup. It turns out to be a sexual experience for him and even though Russ is still in the room, he reaches for his....ahem....veggie straw (if you know what I mean) to get himself off. Russ stops him, saying he has to wait for Frenchie to complete the ritual.
The healing process is going slow until Tala returns the clothes and then it speeds up. Turns out, Frenchie's clothes are an essential part of him and he needs them to heal faster. Eventually it's done and he shifts human again, instantly getting pounced on by a very horny Tala. Frenchie tells Tala that he needs to....ahem...finish in Frenchie's mouth for the ritual to be complete and Tala is 100% on board with that.
They proceed to do things that should never be done in the kitchen. I COOK ON THAT COUNTER DAMN IT!
The next day, Tala takes Frenchie shopping for clothes. No one knows about Frenchie yet, so Tala carries him in his pocket again (in potato form obviously). The owner of the shop is a Beta named Lupin. Tala doesn't like him because he thinks Lupin is conceited and high-maintenance and tries to act like an Alpha. Lupin has a thing for Tala and Frenchie immediately senses it and gets pissed. Tala's wolf isn't too happy either and he feels barraged by their emotions.
Lupin approaches and tried to do some flirting but Tala isn't in the mood. He tells Lupin to back off and then suddenly gets aroused. I'm not sure why. Lupin thinks it's about him though and things get a little crazy. Tala's wolf goes nuts, Frenchie goes nuts and Tala has no choice but to take the potato out of his pocket.
That sounds like a euphemism and it's not.
What the fuck am I reading?
Frenchie shifts and instantly tells Lupin that Tala is his. Lupin is startled but then checks out Frenchie's naked body which causes Tala to grab the first shirt he can reach in order to cover Frenchie up. He tells Lupin that Frenchie needs clothes and Lupin walks off to find something that will fit. As soon as he's gone, Frenchie asks Tala if he fucked Lupin. Tala says he didn't but warns Frenchie that there will be people he definitely did fuck at the ceremony later that night. He reassures Frenchie that none of them mean anything to him.
Lupin returns with some clothing and Frenchie tries it on to make sure it fits. It does so they pay for it all and leave.
Now that we're back in Frenchie's head and he explains why they had to go shopping for extra clothes. They “healed” his special clothes again after Tala ripped them off the night before but decided it might be best if Frenchie wears regular clothes most of the time. That way it won't be a big deal if Tala destroys them.
Or....you know....Tala could just NOT destroy them. It's really not that hard to take clothes off instead of ripping them to shreds.
We skip ahead to the pack meeting/ceremony. Frenchie is nervous at the sight of all the naked, hairy shifters wandering around but he gets out and introduces himself. The pack can tell he's not a wolf but can't identify him. Olowin warns them to be accepting of Frenchie and Lupin makes a crack about Frenchie being a bug or something because he knows Frenchie fits in Tala's pocket but didn't actually see what his other form was.
Tala shifts and gets at Lupin's throat. Olowin demands that Lupin apologize and he does but Tala doesn't let go until ordered to do so. Frenchie can sense the Alpha power coming off Tala and it confuses him. The pack should only have one Alpha. He can also tell that Tala's power is stronger than Olowin's.
Olowin gets the pack's attention again and announces that Frenchie is a potato shifter. They don't believe him so Frenchie shifts. Everyone laughs which pisses Tala off but he keeps his cool. In potato form, Frenchie scents the shifter he smelled before he was attacked and he telepathically communicates to Tala that he smells wet dog again. Tala doesn't know what it means because Frenchie never told him that detail.
The meeting gets underway and Olowin says that Frenchie is to be treated like one of the pack from here forward. Frenchie can sense the pack's displeasure at the idea.
Before the mating ceremony, Olowin asks if anyone wants to challenge the mating. A beta named Leno does, and Frenchie begins freaking out. He's much smaller than Leno and he's never actually been in a fight. Olowin says that Frenchie can pick which form they fight in. He doesn't have to actually beat Leno, he just has to get him out of the circle. Kind of like sumo wrestling I guess. Frenchie chooses to fight in potato form, knowing he has no chance in human form.
When Leno shifts, Frenchie smells the wet dog smell again and is convinced that Leno was at the cabin when Frenchie was attacked. They go to the ceremonial circle and begin the challenge. The earth itself seems to be on Frenchie's side and everyone can feel it. It's energizing and calming all at the same time. Frenchie buries himself in the dirt and Leno goes nuts trying to dig him up. The problem is that Frenchie only smells like dirt so Leno can't find him. After a bit, Frenchie emerges and rolls toward the boundary. In his frenzy to catch Frenchie, Leno's two front paws go over the boundary.
Frenchie is declared the winner but Leno chomps him anyway. Olowin gives Tala the okay and Tala shifts, lunging at Leno. Within seconds, Leno is dead. Alpha power surges out of Tala and this time everyone feels it. Everyone but Olowin adopts a submissive posture. Tala scoops Frenchie up in his mouth and runs for home and the magic dirt.
We skip ahead four days. Frenchie is all healed up and they head back to Olowin's to do the mating ceremony. Frenchie apprehensively asks if he can be challenged again but Tala assures him that no one else can step forward. They had to do it when Olowin asked the first time and only Leno did. Frenchie is reassured but he's still nervous. Along the way, he gets sick and violently throws up several times. Tala is concerned and rushes him to the pack doctor. The doctor asks a bunch of questions and then tells Frenchie that he might be pregnant. They won't know for sure until they do a scan but it's pretty likely. Tala doesn't react well to the news and Frenchie gets upset.
Tala ends up talking it all out with Olowin and his brother advises him to go back and talk to Jem. Tala agrees that it would probably be a good idea. He also wants to pick up more of the magic dirt.
The next day they go back to the doctor's to get the scan done. Frenchie is definitely pregnant with two pups and he immediately panics. He has no idea how potatoes give birth. He doesn't know if can shift while pregnant without hurting the babies. He doesn't know how long the pregnancy will last. He's worried Tala's not happy. Tala reassures him that he's happy – he was just surprised the day before because Frenchie never went into a heat and so he never considered that a pregnancy might happen. Russ suggests Tala go see the doctor in Potatoville to get answers for some of Frenchie's concerns.
They go home and Frenchie falls into an exhausted sleep. Tala emails Jem about everything that's going on. Russ asks him to reconfirm with Jem that he can't go home. Tala takes offense to this and says the Olowin will make him a good mate. Russ says that Olowin doesn't want him but Tala says his brother was just hurt. Russ can fix it if he tries.
A week passes I think. Frenchie has horrible nausea pretty much all day and his stomach is growing at an alarming rate. Tala ends up going to Potatoville with the pack doctor to meet with the potato doctor and to pick up more dirt. He learns that potatoes can give birth in either form and it's okay for Frenchie to shift – or at least it would be if Frenchie was pregnant with potatoes but they aren't sure about the pup thing since it's never come up. Frenchie will need to be in the magic dirt when he gives birth so Tala fills the bed of his truck with it.
We skip ahead several months. Frenchie complains to Tala about how poorly the Omegas are treated. Tala never noticed, but now that Frenchie's brought it up, he sees it and he doesn't like it. Omegas are the lowest rank but they should still be respected. One day at the shop, he catches Redin being a bitch to one of the Omegas and chews him out for it. Redin gets mouthy and Olowin ends up kicking him out of the pack. I expected this to have some kind of impact on the story but it doesn't. Maybe it's setting something up for the next book.
Frenchie goes into labor and gives birth to two healthy male pups. I think they're both boys. They name them Togo and Paco.
A few days after their birth, Frenchie finally tells Tala about the “wet dog” smell and his suspicions about Leno being the one who attacked him. Tala says it's a good thing Leno is already dead. I kind of expected a reveal that Leno wasn't acting alone or that someone else was the one who actually attacked Frenchie and Leno just happened to be around the area but neither of those things happened. I'm not sure why this part was even added in the book. Leno's already dead so it doesn't matter at all.
We reach the epilogue. Three months have passed and they finally go back to Olowin's to finish the mating ceremony. Tala and Frenchie decide this is a good opportunity to get their brothers together so they ask Olowin and Russ to watch the twins so they can have a little honeymoon after the ritual. The ceremony goes off without a hitch this time and the book ends with Tala and Frenchie having more sex out by the river.
This was the longest recap I've ever done for this blog. I think. This book was better written than the books I normally read for this blog but I still feel like the story could have used some more work. The attack on Frenchie was never really explained. I guess the motivation was Leno wanting Tala but we don't find out for sure. All that shit with Redin went nowhere and just took up space. We never learn why Jem sent Russ with Tala or why Russ was even at Jem's house in the first place. Maybe some of these questions will be answered in the next book but who knows. I don't know if I'll read the next one or not. I felt like this one was unnecessarily long and I'm worried the next one will be too. We'll see.
